How long does CPR and First Aid certification last?
HSI CPR and First Aid certification is valid for 2 years. After your course you'll receive a digital card by email from HSI. Physical replacement cards are available for $10 if needed.
Is hybrid certification accepted by Alaska employers?
Yes. Hybrid certification earns the same HSI credential as a fully in-person class and is accepted by Alaska employers and most healthcare facilities. The U.S. Coast Guard also accepts it for maritime compliance. If your employer specifically requires a fully in-person class, choose that option. Most do not have that restriction.
What training do commercial fishing vessels need in Alaska?
Coast Guard rules for commercial fishing vessels (46 CFR Part 28) require a set number of crew trained in first aid and CPR, based on how many people are aboard. There is no federal AED requirement for fishing vessels. Both hybrid ($85) and in-person ($125) formats earn the HSI First Aid and CPR card.
What is the difference between hybrid and in-person?
Both earn the same 2-year HSI certification. Hybrid is online knowledge and videos at your own pace, then an in-person skills check of 45 minutes to an hour in Sitka. In-person covers everything in one class of 5 to 6 hours. Hybrid is $85 per person. In-person is $125 per person.
Which CPR course does OSHA require in Alaska?
OSHA does not require every worker to be certified. Federal OSHA and AKOSH require someone at the workplace to be trained in first aid when a clinic or hospital is not close by, and some jobs, such as electrical work and logging, also require CPR. Most Sitka employers meet this with the Adult First Aid | CPR AED course, available in both hybrid ($85) and in-person ($125) formats. Check with your employer for their exact requirement.
